Gmail crash leaves thousands without email

A storage issue caused thousands of Gmail users to be blocked from their accounts, with some facing the prospect of losing all of their emails.

The issue was first identified on Sunday night and initial reports suggested that as many as 40,000 Gmail users were affected, with accounts either unable to be accessed or showing no emails or contacts. The figure has since been revised downwards and Google now says that they have restored full service to the majority of those affected, with 'around 60' likely to lose some or all emails prior to 18 December 2010.

The issue was first reported on Google's App Status Dashboard with the message, "We're investigating reports of an issue with Google Mail. We will provide more information shortly." This was regularly updated throughout Sunday and Monday and the current status reads: "Google Mail service has already been restored for some users, and we expect a resolution for all users in the near future.
