First 2013 search stats revealed

The latest UK search engine market share research for January 2013 has been published by visitor counter service StatCounter Global Stats.

During January, Google.com and Google.co.uk search engines received a combined total of 90.29 per cent of UK search volume. This is a further large dip of 0.28 per cent compared to its December 2012 search engine market share, lower than any stats recorded throughout 2012. Meanwhile, Ask has grown to 0.67 per cent of UK search volume, while Yahoo is slightly down to 2.3 per cent.

However, the biggest change was seen for Bing; search volume is up by 0.42 to 5.25, the first time it has surpassed 5 per cent and the highest volume StatCounter has ever recorded for the Microsoft search engine.

Bing boom?

Since launching in June 2009, Bing has seen a steady growth in UK search volume to its current level; in the US meanwhile Bing's market share has consistently been higher than in the UK, at around 10-15 per cent. However, on a global scale both Bing and Google face growing competition from non-US-based search engines such as Baidu and Yandex. The latter was revealed last week to have surpassed Bing to become the world's fourth most-used search platform.

Bing's stats could be set to further improve following the announcement this month of Bing's integration with Facebook Graph Search. Bing's indexing will be combined with Facebook's social data to serve the search results to an estimated 1 billion active users. Bing's indexing is also currently used by Yahoo, so CEO Marissa Mayer's promised "big push on search" in 2013 could be good news for both parties. Microsoft founder Bill Gates is certainly confident in the search engine, claiming on Reddit recently that Bing is superior to Google.
