Yahoo teams up with Twitter

Yahoo has announced a new partnership with Twitter as the company steps up its real-time search (RTS) offering.

In October 2009, Google and Bing struck a deal with Twitter that enabled the search engine giants to index all public tweets. Responding to the challenge, Twitter Search integrated tweets for buzzing topics in December, but now it can show tweets for all keywords after gaining access to the full public feed. Announcing the news yesterday, Yahoo claimed that users will begin to see Twitter RTS results immediately although it does not appear to be live for everybody yet.

Aside from real-time search updates, Yahoo is planning to roll out two further big innovations later this year. The first change is that consumers will be able to read personal Twitter feeds directly from properties such as the Yahoo homepage, Yahoo Mail and Yahoo Sports. The second addition is that people will be able to update their Twitter status directly from Yahoo.

Twitter deal in 140 characters or less

Bryan Lamkin, senior vice president of the consumer products group at Yahoo, felt the Twitter partnership was an important step forward. "Let me try to capture the enormity of this integration in 140 characters or less," he said. "We're turning the key to the online social universe
