Gains all round
The latest UK search engine market share stats for April 2013 have been published by visitor counter service StatCounter Global Stats.
The data shows that Google.com and Google.co.uk search engines received a combined total of 90.55 per cent of UK search volume in April 2013. It's a slight increase on its March 2013 search engine market share, up by 0.09; a good recovery following February's record low of 89.38 per cent.
Bing meanwhile has also risen by 0.05 to 5.42, and Yahoo has climbed marginally to 2.62 - its highest in a year. In fact the only category to have dwindled in April is 'other' search engines, made up by Ask, AOL and further alternatives - dipping to 1.41 per cent of the total volume between them.
Google trends in April
There was lots of good news for Google in April, from acquiring news aggregator Wavii to a huge increase in Google Play revenues; meanwhile an independent study named Google the safest search engine. However, the search giant is also subject to an ongoing EU antitrust investigation which has resulted in several proposed changes to SERPs being revealed last week. In other news, Google quietly removed two of its search features in April - the related searches filter, and the instant previews button, due to low usage.
According to Google Trends, the fastest rising UK search terms in April included Margaret Thatcher, the Grand National and the Boston Marathon attacks. Gaming craze Candy Crush and the recently released Iron Man 3 also made it into the top ten. Worldwide, Psy's new single Gentleman occupied all top three positions for fastest-rising YouTube searches.
