The end of a mobile era
The simple feature phone is becoming hidden in the shadows of the increasingly popular smartphone.
A report undertaken by the IDC has found that smartphone shipments are up by 48 per cent in comparison to the same period in 2010. Smartphones from Apple, RIM, HTC and Samsung currently lead the market as they now account for 52 per cent of the 42 million mobile phones sold in Europe. This means that for the first time ever, there have been more shipments of smartphones than of the internet-free feature phone. This is completely different from last year, where the smartphone held a mere third of the market.
The continual development and innovation of the mobile phone means that more people are hankering after the newest feature and design. The smartphone's plethora of convenient extras including instant access to the internet and a multitude of apps seem to be attracting more people to the device. IDC has stated: "Feature phones are becoming a niche segment driven by the very-low-end devices targeted at users who only need a device for voice and texts."
How the mobile has developed
Adrian Mursec, senior developer at theEword, stated: "While people may mourn the end of the feature phone era, this is simply the next step in the continual development of the mobile phone." The mobile has continued to evolve since its birth as the device has significantly decreased in size from the 1980s and the introduction of the camera saw another wave of change in 2002. The ability to browse the internet instantly is the next step in improving the quality of the mobile phones upon the market.
