Launch date for iPad 2

iPad 2 launch date

The iPad 2 will be unveiled a week today, according to a highly respected technology journalist.

Kara Swisher, co-executive editor of the Wall Street Journal's All Things Digital blog, claims "several sources close to the situation" have told her the official iPad 2 launch date will be Wednesday, 2 March 2011. As usual, Apple plans to hold the event in San Fransisco, with the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts tipped as the most likely venue. It is not known whether Apple CEO Steve Jobs, currently on a leave of absence due to health reasons, will attend.

iPad 2 features

The iPad 2 is expected to include several new features. These include a front-facing camera, an enhanced display and support for Facetime video chat. The iPad 2 is also thought to be slimmer than the original iPad, which is 13.4mm thick.

If the report proves correct, it would mean Apple is on course to release the iPad 2 almost exactly a year after the first-generation device launched, quashing rumours of a lengthy delay. The original iPad launched in the US on 3 April 2010, with the UK release following shortly after on 28 May. Apple's last earnings call revealed that almost 15 million devices have been sold to date.

Flagging demand for iPhone 4

A new product launch would provide a major boost to Apple, after research suggested demand is shrinking for its flagship smartphone. Figures from the uSwitch.com Mobile Tracker, which scores handsets based on live sales and searches, show that the 16GB iPhone could only manage sixth place in the list of the UK's most popular devices in February 2011, down from third a month earlier.
