Manchester’s Role in LGBTQ+ History.

Manchester Pride

Discover how Manchester has played a pivotal role in shaping the LGBTQ+ community and continues to help us achieve equality.

Manchester has played a key role in LGBTQ+ history thanks to some of the city’s great achievements such as the Albert Kennedy Trust, standing up in defiance to Section 28 and being the set location for the 90’s TV classic Queer as Folk.

Manchester really is the heart of the LGBTQ+ community, and it proved it by hosting the first ever Pride event in the UK in 1990. The Manchester LGBTQ+ history doesn’t stop there, because 2013 saw the world’s first permanent Trans Memorial Garden unveiled in Manchester’s Sackville Gardens.

Manchester is a city with an abundance of inclusive history, and we’re sure it’s only going to keep on thriving. To celebrate this great city’s support we have put together a Manchester LGBTQ+ timeline to showcase and highlight the vital role Manchester has played, and will continue to play in achieving equality.
